The SN74LV4046APWRG4 is a monolithic Clock Generator and Frequency Divider circuit designed for high data rate applications. It is available in plastic DIP and TSOP packages. The SN74LV4046APWRG4 can be used for generation of sine wave clocks in the range of 1Hz – 2MHz and for frequency division from 0 (DC) to 2MHz. The frequency is adjustable by three external resistor and capacitor components, typically within 0.1% accuracy.

At the heart of the SN74LV4046APWRG4 is a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a divide by-3 frequency divider chain. The VCO output is divided by one of 3 different stages to generate the final frequency output. The SN74LV4046APWRG4 has an external switchable frequency selection input, which allows the user to choose between two different frequencies. The output frequency can be adjusted with three external resistors and two external capacitors.The SN74LV4046APWRG4 has two selectable output frequencies: a high frequency (HFO) and a low frequency (LFO). The HFO has a preset frequency range of 1Hz to 2MHz, while the LFO has a preset frequency range of 16.5Hz to 215Hz. The HFO frequency can be adjusted with three resistors (R1, R2 and R3), while the LFO frequency is set by two external capacitors (C1 and C2).The external clock input is used to synchronize the operation of the oscillator. A logic “0” signal on this pin will force the oscillator to reset, while a logic “1” signal will cause the oscillator to start up again.
