Logic - Universal Bus Functions

The SN74LVT18512DGGR (hereafter referred to as the SN74) is a 1Gbps transceiver for general parallel and serial applications. The SN74 offers some unique advantages for certain applications and is highly compatible with the standard logic families. This paper will discuss the application fields and the working principles of the SN74.The SN74 is capable of two types of communication: single-ended and differential. In single-ended mode, the transceiver can be used to interface between two buses that use the same voltage levels. In differential mode, the transceiver can use two different voltage levels to provide high speed and noise immunity. Both modes support communication between different logic families.The SN74 can operate with three different protocols: point-to-point, daisy chain and time division multiplexing (TDM). Point-to-point communication allows for direct connection between two or more buses without needing to go through a bus switch or constraint network. This approach is typically used in low speed applications with larger buses, such as Ethernet.In daisy chain mode, the transceiver can be connected to multiple other transceivers, creating a chain of buses. This offers the advantage of connecting multiple devices with very little wiring, which is beneficial in space constrained applications. Lastly, TDM mode allows for data to be shared between two or more buses while maintaining synchronization and timing. This mode is typically used in high speed and low latency applications, such as streaming video.In addition to its communication modes, the SN74 also offers other features that make it suitable for various application fields. It has high tolerance for power supply and temperature fluctuations and can operate reliably at -40°C to +85°C temperatures without any derating of performance. It also has a built-in ESD and electrostatic discharge protection, making it suitable for use in industrial and automotive environments.The SN74’s working principle is based on a number of transistors and diodes that are connected in pairs in a linear configuration. The transceiver contains three basic components: an input buffer, an output driver, and a logic gate.
