The SN74S1050N is an 8-bit shift register/latch designed for use in a variety of special-purpose logic applications. It is ideal for shift-register/latch applications where the input data can be changed at any time during operation. The SN74S1050N is composed of a Serial-in, Parallel-out (SIPO) shift register and latch circuits. The register is composed of 8-bit shift registers with dataIsolated latches, allowing data inputs to be changed independently of the output states. The latch is served as a feed-forward path for the serial input data so that any data placed on the inputs is available at the outputs with no intervening clock pulse.

The SN74S1050N can be used in many different applications. It can be used for digital counters, databuffers, delays, digital clocks, multiplexers, pattern generators, synchronization, and digital loggingand measurement devices. It can also be used in specialized circuits where an asynchronousparallel serial shift circuit is necessary.

The SN74S1050N also works as a synchronous shift register. When a clock signal is applied,the data at each register will simultaneously move one position. This can be used in combinationwith a serial input for rapid shifting of large numbers of bits. In addition, the SN74S1050N can beused to generate serial output pulses and predetermined data streams.

The SN74S1050N has four different modes of operation depending on the signal applied to the preset and clear inputs. When these inputs are high, the device functions as a parallel-out shiftregister and the data Serially shifted into the first stage is available at output Q0. When these inputsare low, the device functions as an 8-bit zero-set latch and the data inputs are latched onto the parallel output lines. The clear input\'s function is to reset the data in the register or latch to all zerosand the preset input\'s function is to set the data in the register or latch to all ones.

The SN74S1050N can also be operated in three more modes. The first mode is shift-data and clear,which causes the register to act as a Serial-in, parallel-out shift register with the data on theinputs shifted to the outputs on the falling edge of the clock input. The second mode is load-in-parallel and clear and the third mode is load data and preset. Both of these modes cause thedevice to act as a 8-bit parallel-load latch with the data on the inputs latched onto the outputson the falling edge of the clock input. The data on the inputs will remain latched on the outputuntil the clear input is raised again.

The SN74S1050N is a great choice for applications requiring an all-purpose 8-bit shift register/latch.It can be used for a variety of special-purpose logic applications such as digital counters, databuffers, delays, digital clocks, multiplexers, pattern generators, synchronization, and digitallogging and measurement devices.
