DC DC Converters

DC DC converters are electronic devices either to increase or decrease the dc (direct current) voltage. A DC DC converter can have many applications, such as, powering personal electronic devices, computer-controlled machinery, industrial instruments, mobile equipment, lighting systems, and so on.

The process of the power conversion involves the following steps:

  • The primary switch is enabled by the control signal.
  • The current through the primary switch increases due to an internal bias to reach a peak level.
  • The current flowing through the primary switch then decreases, reaching a low level, and the resulting current flows through the secondary winding of the external inductor.
  • The current from the primary switch stores energy in the external inductor.
  • The secondary switch is enabled, the current from the primary switch then flows into the load, and the resulting current also stores energy in the external inductor.
  • Finally, the current through the primary switch increases again, and the cycle repeats.

The external inductor is of vital importance in providing stable current regulation and an efficient power conversion. It is necessary to select the correct inductor, otherwise, the circuit may suffer from stability problems, due to an increased RMS and peak output current.

The inductor has a significant effect on the output current deviation upon load changes, as the inductor is the main component in determining the power conversion efficiency and the stability of the DC DC converter. The inductor also has an effect on the operating temperature of the circuit.

The output ripple is also a key factor to consider when selecting an inductor. If the inductor is too small it will result in higher output ripple, which can affect the load output. The SNDHS250B12 inductor size should be selected carefully to minimize ripple voltage and to maximize efficiency.
