TVS - Diodes
TVS - Diodes, commonly known as Transient Voltage Suppresssor (TVS) diodes, are manufacturers’ solutions for the protection against transient voltage surges in electrical and electronic systems. TVS diodes, also referred to as surge suppression diodes or transient voltage suppressors, protect equipment from transients, defined as sudden, powerful changes in voltage. TVS diodes are designed to provide a high-speed, low-resistance clamping action when utilized as protection against voltage peaks and transients.
In particular, SP3222-02ETG, which can be categorized as a TVS-diode, is a highly efficient, low capacitance range device with double line to ground (L2G) robust TVS protection. Its application field and working principle are to provide double line to ground (L2G) robust overvoltage protection against control line surge. It has a breakover voltage, VBR of 43.2V and a stand-off voltage, VWM of 28.9V. Its breakdown voltage also ensures primary protection even when the applied surge current is combined with the line impedance.

The working principle of the TVS diode is based on the flow of electrons through a diode in forward (normal) or reverse (clamping) direction. When connected in reverse, the diode will act as a low impedance path that clamps the transient voltage. When the transient voltage rises to the diode’s specified clamping voltage (Vbr), its low impedance conduction path is activated. This allows current to flow from the transient voltage source to the diode output. As current passes through the diode, energy is dissipated and the clamping voltage is temporarily decreased. As the transient voltage drops below the stand-off voltage (Vwm), normal diode operation is restored, thereby providing protection against voltage overshoots.
SP3222-02ETG’s double line to ground transient voltage protection technique is cost effective and highly efficient requiring no external components and reducing the need for space consuming protection circuitry. It significantly reduces the probability of damage caused by the noise generated by switching currents over the circuit.
