SP3238ECY-L Application Field and Working PrincipleThe SP3238ECY-L is a low cost, low voltage EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 Interface IC device. It was designed to provide robust, full-duplex communication links, and includes the necessary handshake signaling line control to support data communications using point-to-point and multi-drop configurations. The SP3238ECY-L is ideal for low-cost applications in embedded systems, modems, and similar data communications applications.The SP3238ECY-L is a receiver/transceiver device that is designed to convert between TTL/CMOS logic levels and EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24, which supports data rates up to 75kbps. It has an integrated 14 pin package, which provides a complete and simple solution for EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 applications. It allows the user to easily incorporate a half or full duplex system by utilizing just a few external components.The SP3238ECY-L includes an integrated TTL/CMOS-to-TTL/CMOS transmit buffer and a TTL/CMOS-to-TTL/CMOS receive buffer, with the required level translator of ±15V to ±3.3V or 5.0V. The SP3238ECY-L also provides a 13th receive buffer which is connected directly to the EIA/TIA-232/V.24, no level shifter is required for this output. The SP3238ECY-L has low power and power down modes, which allow the user to reduce their power consumption.The SP3238ECY-L has an integrated on-chip oscillator and a D-flip-flop, which is used for clock generation. The D-Flip-Flop is used to create two separate clocks, a receive clock and a transmit clock. An external clock source can be used or the oscillator can be programmed to generate clocks at different frequencies. The SP3238ECY-L is also equipped with an under-voltage detect feature which ensures that the device will not operate in an invalid voltage condition.The device also has control pins that are used to control the data flow. These pins are Txd, Rxd, CTS, RTS, XIN and XOUT. Txd and Rxd pins are used to transmit and receive data, while the CTS and RTS pins are used for handshaking signals. XIN and XOUT pins are used to provide externally generated clocks.The SP3238ECY-L has several power down modes which are used to reduce power consumption. The device has an idle mode which is used for maintaining communication during a period when nothing is transmitted.
