Fuses have been used for over a century in the electrical industry for safety and protection. Today, the technology still plays an important yet lesser-known role in protecting interconnection systems and power system equipment in a wide variety of applications. One such type is the “Super Short Cycling Time Circuit Fuse” (SSTC).SSTC fuses have a very fast cycling time, allowing them to withstand voltage fluctuation without blowing. The fast-acting nature means they also provide better protection to sensitive equipment such as semiconductors, capacitors and transformers.In comparison to other types of fuses, SSTCs are smaller, do not require a large ampacity derating factor, and have a higher energy rating. They are also designed to carry bigger current without breaking down. This makes them suitable for applications such as topology-fused converters.SSTCs work by virtue of a bimetallic strip that is composed of two dissimilar metals, each with a different thermal coefficient of expansion. When current flows through this strip, it causes the strip to heat up and bend. This bending action trips the fuse and causes the link to open.There are different types of SSTCs available in the market, depending on the type of application.
