Inrush Current Limiters (ICLs) are devices designed to mitigate damaging inrush currents during the power-up of electrical circuits. The ST1R005B is a relatively compact ICL that is used to limit current transients and improve system reliability for a variety of applications. This inrush current limiter features a high peak power rating of 400W with a low nominal resistance, low thermal resistance, and is UL approved. It also features an adjustable trip current.
This ICL follows the typical design of other high-performance inrush current limiters. It is composed of two main components, a center core of looped conductive wire covered in an insulating material, and the outer body, which is also typically made of insulating material. The center core is made up of several turns of conductive wire, and when the ST1R005B is powered up, it acts as a shorted coils.
When the power supply is switched on, the ICL cuts down the rising current to a predetermined level. The increasing magnetic field in the ICL’s center core opposes the rising current, thus limiting the inrush current to the desired value. When the current reaches this point, the contact resistance of the center core increases, with the field eventually reducing and allowing a further increase in current until the current reaches its valid threshold.
The mechanism of resistor-based inrush current limiters is based on resistance in the circuit, rather than a time delay before the start of the circuit. The ST1R005B can effectively reduce inrush current to about 5% of its original value due to its low resistance. This makes it an ideal ICL for applications such as LED lighting, home appliances, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics.
The ST1R005B is also designed to provide protection against withstand voltage as well as surges and voltage transients. The ICL features a switchable trip current, allowing it to be used for circuits with different power capabilities and current draw. It is rated to provide protection up to 400W, supports a wide operating temperature range of -30°C to +120°C, and is UL approved for commercial and residential applications.
The ST1R005B inrush current limiter is an excellent choice for a variety of applications. Its adjustable trip current, high peak power rating, low resistance, and UL listed make it ideally suited for LED lighting, home appliances, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics.
