Inrush Current Limiters (ICL) are important components used in power supply applications that limit the amount of current flowing through the system during the power-on period. ST2R503B is an example of an Inrush Current Limiter (ICL), which is suitable for use in consumer, industrial, automotive and medical electronic applications. It provides a reliable method for controlling and limiting inrush current and protecting up to a maximum of 6A.

The ST2R503B provides low turn-on voltage and clamping voltage, along with a very low dynamic resistance, which give enhanced electrical performance as compared to other inrush current limiters. The device also features low capacitive leakage current, fast switching operation and very low thermal effects.

The ST2R503B is a silicon oxide (SOI) based MOSFET device that consists of a single N-channel MOSFET, a gate resistor and a temperature sensing diode. It works using a principle known as ‘Parasitic Capacitive Current Limiting’, whereby the current limit is determined by the gate resistor and the parasitic capacitance between the drain and source of the MOSFET.

When the power supply is first switched on, a large amount of inrush current flows through the power supply and drawn from the line. This current rise is determined by the capacitive load of the system. If the current rises above the maximum set current, the ST2R503B will respond to it by turning off the MOSFET, which will thereby limit the current and protect the power supply.

The gate resistor of the ST2R503B is designed to hold the voltage between the gate and the source at a constant value when the MOSFET is off, thus preventing the gate voltage from rising and trapping the MOSFET in the off position. In order to ensure reliable operation of the ST2R503B in cases where the ambient temperature increases, a temperature sensing diode is integrated to detect the over-temperature and activate an internal timer which increases the off-time of the MOSFET.

The ST2R503B is suitable for both AC and DC applications and provides reliable operation over a wide range of line voltages and output currents. With its low parasitics, fast switching, low capacitive leakage current, and low thermal effects, it provides excellent inrush current protection and is suitable for a variety of consumer, industrial, automotive, and medical applications.
