Thyristors - DIACs, SIDACsThyristors are solid-state electronic components that are typically used for general purpose on/off control, phase control and for rectifying AC and DC. They can either conduct or block the current flow in either direction depending on the gate signal. Thyristors are predominantly composed of four layers of semiconductor materials with different types of dopants. A DIAC (or diode for alternating current) is a type of thyristor that conducts in both directions when the voltage between the two electrodes exceed the breakdown voltage and does not require a gate signal. Thanks to their bidirectional behavior, DIACs are uniquely suited for use in AC circuits. The DIAC assists in protecting the connected circuit and controlling inrush current. It is used in conjunction with the TRIAC in application areas including light dimmers, motor speed controllers, and AC power control.Unlike DIACs, SIDACs (or bidirectional solid state switches) remain in the non-conductive state until the breakdown voltage is exceeded. Then, the SIDAC will turn ‘on’ and remain in the conductive state until the current falls below the holding current (or latching current). With their ability to latch in a ‘on’ state and no minimum turn-on voltage, SIDACs are ideally used in AC voltage triggering, as well as in AC surge suppression and motor speed control applications. ST40RP is a special type of two-part thyristor consisting of two parts connected in series that can be controlled by individual half gate circuits. This type of thyristor is suitable for Resistive, Inductive and Capacitive loads and widely used in phased controlled applications.The two main parts of the ST40RP are called the Anode and Cathode. The Anode is the positive value between the two and the Cathode is the negative value between the two. Both parts need a minimum voltage (the breakdown voltage) in order to be triggered and they will remain ‘on’ even after the voltage drops below the holding current.When the voltage between the Anode and Cathode exceeds the breakdown voltage, current will flow through the thyristor. The triggering of the thyristor is accomplished through the TRIAC Add a Gate electrode. To turn the thyristor off, the gate electrode is connected to the Cathode and the ST40RP will be turned off.Another variety of thyristors, the SIDAC, is similar to the ST40RP in most respects, except for the way that it turns ‘on’ and ‘off’. SIDACs remain in the ‘on’ state until the current drops below the latching or holding current; therefore, no gate signal is required. This makes them great for AC surge suppressors or AC voltage trigger applications.In conclusion, thyristors are an important and versatile family of electronic components with numerous applications. DIACs and SIDACs are two popular varieties that can be used to rectify AC and DC current and protect connected circuits, as well as for other applications such as control and triggering.
