The STUSB03EQR is an USB Type-C port controller used for bi-directional power delivery of up to 3A for Battery Charging Specification 1.2 (BC1.2). The device is also compliant with USB Power Delivery Standard 3.0, USB Type-CTM Standard Gen1 and Gen2, and VCONN power delivery.[1]
Application Field of STUSB03EQR
The STUSB03EQR can be used in wider application field such as AC/DC adapters and chargers, smart phone/PC/tablet, gaming cross platform power delivery, automotive and industrial applications, medical equipment, set top box/dongles and DisplayPort Alternate mode. It enables data, audio/video and power to be exchanged between two USB Type-C ports. It is designed to combine improved power delivery, robust transient voltage protection and enhanced surge protection for these applications.[1]
Working Principle of STUSB03EQR
The STUSB03EQR is built with two analog channels, two USB Type-C channels, one digital control unit and one power delivery controller. The two analog channels are responsible for the USB Type-C port detection and they utilize the resistance difference between the CC1 and CC2 pins to detect the orientation. The USB Type-C port detect sequence is designed to determine the type of devices connected, its power capability, and detect the acceptable port plug orientation.
The two USB Type-C channels are responsible for USB Type-C port power delivery and data transfer. They provide power according to USB Type-CTM Standard and Power Delivery 3.0 Standard. The data transfer conforms to USB specification 2.0, 3.2 and 4.0. The channel will detect the orientation of the Type-C port to ensure reliable reversible plug connection of the port.
The digital control unit (DCU) is responsible for the overall control of STUSB03EQR. It supports multiple modes of power delivery, including power supply from AC adapter, battery charge control, adapter emulator, and other control functions. The DCU can detect the voltage and current of the source, BAT, VBUS and CC1/CC2 pins, and control the Type-C port output power based on the voltage and current conditions.
The power delivery controller is responsible for the transmission and reception among USB Type-C ports both in power and data modes. It supports BC1.2 power delivery, USB Type-CTM Standard and USB Power Delivery 3.0 Standard. It can detect the voltage and current of the source and control the power delivery to the VBUS. The power delivery controller can monitor the current and voltage of the Type-C port and adjust it accordingly.
The STUSB03EQR is designed to combine improved power delivery, robust transient voltage protection, and enhanced surge protection for the application field previously mentioned. It enables data, audio/video, and power to be exchanged between two USB Type-C ports.
