DC-DC converters are devices designed to convert an input voltage level to another voltage level. They are typically used in automotive systems, consumer electronics, railway, industrial, communications and medical applications, as an alternative to linear regulators. The SUS34815C is a DC-DC converter IC optimized for automotive systems.This IC has been designed in consideration of contact with gasoline and develops a dust protection structure, as well as applying a 4-pin package. It provides on-chip protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent and short circuit while offering a low noise operation and high-speed transient response.The SUS34815C works as an adjustable voltage regulator, providing a regulated output voltage that is adjustable up to 5V from its input voltage, typically 12 V, using an external resistor. The basic principle of operation of the SUS34815C is a switch mode converter. It contains a high side N-channel MOSFET and a low side P-channel MOSFET that forms the switch of the converter.When a high side MOSFET is turned on, the inductor current increases linearly with its voltage being equal to the input voltage. When the high side MOSFET turns off, the stored energy in the inductor is transferred to the output through the low side MOSFET, while the inductor current decreases and tends to zero. This is typically known as the flyback path.The SUS34815C provides several control pins to adjust its behavior, such as, the Soft Start pin which helps setting the minimum operating frequency of the converter, the Ground Reference pin which adjusts the internal reference voltage and the RDN pin which adjusts the duty cycle of the light load operation.The SUS34815C also includes various protection circuits. It has a soft start function that prevents a surge current at start-up. It also provides thermal Shutdown circuit which disables the converter when the junction temperature rises and an overvoltage shutdown circuit which turns off the output gate drive when the output voltage exceeds a certain level.The SUS34815C can operate in various modes depending on the application. In the continuous conduction mode, the current in the inductor never drops to zero. In the discontinuous conduction mode, the converter operates in two sub-modes. In forced discontinuous mode, the inductor current drops to zero at every cycle, while in valley edition mode, the inductor current drops to zero after the output voltage has reached the regulated value and the converter stops to pulse.The SUS34815C is an extremely versatile and reliable DC-DC converter IC, which provides a lot of flexibility and features for automotive systems, with integrated protection functions and various modes of operation. Its output current capability and voltage range make it a suitable solution for demanding applications.
