A DC-DC converter is an electronic device which allocates, or converts, high-voltage direct current (DC) from a single source into multiple low-voltage direct-current sources. It has a variety of uses, such as providing power sources for batteries, voltage regulation for electronic components, or acting as a signal amplifier. A popular example are DC-DC converters for laptop computer batteries; these plug-in modules contain DC-DC converters that convert AC mains input at 12VDC or 19VDC to 20VDC suitable for the laptop battery.The SW003A5F91-SR is a DC-DC converter which is designed to operate at an input voltage of 8.1V to 36V and an output voltage of 3.3V. It is used to provide a constant output voltage for circuit applications that require a higher voltage than provided by the input source. It has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, and an ultra low minimum output current of 10mA.The SW003A5F91-SR is capable of providing high temperatures for its output voltage. It has an ultra-high current of 2A and an ultra-low dropout voltage of 200mV. It uses a synchronous buck-boost converter topology and operates with a 95% efficiency rating.The working principles of the SW003A5F91-SR are based on the switching of a voltage source from a high to a low operation. The buck-boost converter topology of this DC-DC converter allows for asynchronous operation of the voltage source. When the output voltage of the converter needs to be increased, the DC-DC converter switches its operation from high to low, and vice versa when the output voltage needs to be decreased. This process is called “Pulse Width Modulation” (PWM).In addition to the buck-boost topology, the SW003A5F91-SR also uses a voltage-mode control technique. This technique monitors the output voltage through an internal voltage reference, and determines the duty cycle required to adjust or maintain the output voltage.The SW003A5F91-SR is an ideal DC-DC converter for applications requiring either low or high output voltages.
