SX8644EVK is a 24-bit capacitive sensing platform that enables contactless x and y coordinates to be measured. It is a sensing-specific evaluation board that comes pre-populated with an on-board SX8644 device and several external components, making it a ready-to-use system. This board is ideal for applications that require contactless measurement of x and y coordinates with an accuracy of up to +/− 0.25 mm at a distance of up to 40 cm, such as in-car touch screens, gaming terminals, medical systems, and robotics.

The SX8644EVK works by measuring the electrostatic capacitance that is created between its integrated SX8644 device and the object under test. It does this by using its three integrated electrodes to form a differential capacitor, where the differential signal is proportional to the x and y coordinate measurements. This differential capacitor is then amplified and converted via the integrated ADC.

The SX8644EVK evaluation board features an integrated SX8644 device with its associated firmware, and several external components. These components include an Atmel SAM D20 microcontroller, an Atmel AVR ATmega328P microcontroller, current sources, a filter capacitor, an operational amplifier, a reference capacitor, and a few standard resistors and capacitors. All of these components are housed on the same board, making it extremely easy to implement and use.

The SX8644EVK evaluation board is based on an Atmel SAM D20 microcontroller that is pre-programmed with the firmware necessary for the SX8644 device to operate. The firmware is loaded into the microcontroller when the board is powered up and the operating parameters are set to ensure optimal performance. The SX8644 device itself contains all of the algorithms necessary to measure x and y coordinates with a detail resolution of up to 1 mm, which can be further improved by connecting additional external circuits.

The operating principle for the SX8644EVK evaluation board is very simple. The SX8644 device is configured by the host microcontroller to detect changes in the capacitance of the connected external circuit. The differential capacitance created between the SX8644 device and the external circuit is then amplified and converted into digital x and y coordinates using the integrated ADC. This data is then read back and used to detect movements or changes in the external circuit.
