Working Principle

The SX8647I05AULTRT works by measuring the electrical capacity that is generated when an object is brought within proximity of the sensing electrodes. This capacitance is then used to determine the position and movement of the object. As the object moves closer to the electrodes, the capacitance of the influencing object increases. In order for the device to accurately measure capacitance it has two different modes of operation; one for static objects and one for dynamic objects.

When it used in static operation the device measures the static capacitance of the object. This is done by measuring the capacitance on a set of electrodes (also called capacitive measurement channels) and comparing it to a reference level. If the capacitance is different than the reference level, then the object is determined to be present. When used in dynamic operation the device measures the change in capacitance between different sets of electrodes. This is used to measure the movement of the object relative to the electrodes.
