DC-DC converters convert an input direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another level to meet the electricity requirement of electronic devices or systems. Overview
SXE15-48S3V3-R is an isolated DC-DC converter with an input voltage of 9-18V and an output of 3.3V/15A. It also features remote on/off control, high power density and low thermal resistance. Working Principle
The SXE15-48S3V3-R DC-DC converter adopts a topology called isolated phase-shift full-bridge, also known as Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). The basic circuit schematic of the SXE15-48S3V3-R is shown in Fig. 1. This topology has two principal circuits: the main circuit and the bias circuit. Both circuits are isolated by an opto-coupler. The main circuit includes four power switches, an inductor, a rectifying diode, a capacitor, and a transformer. The bias circuit includes two resistors, two diodes, and a capacitor. This type of converter is used to effectively convert voltage and/or current with an input voltage and output current that can range from hundreds of millivolts to tens of kilovolts and from ten amperes to thousands of amperes, respectively.

In this converter, two capacitors are used. The first one is the main capacitor, which is connected in series with inductor L1, and provides the boost to the output voltage. The second one is the bias capacitor, which is used to supply the power for the control circuit. Both capacitors can be either ceramic, film, or electrolytic types, depending on their application requirements. During operation, the switching transistors Q1-Q4 are operated at 100kHz frequency, which enables high efficiency and low-noise operation. The four switches alternate between two states: the high-side switches (Q1 and Q4) are open and the low-side switches (Q2 and Q3) are closed, or the high-side switches are closed and the low-side switches are open (See Fig.2).

When the high-side switches are open and the low-side switches are closed, the current flows through inductor L1. At the same time, voltage is applied to the transistor gates, allowing them to turn on. During this period, the current increases until it reaches the rated value, at which point, the high-side switches are switched off and the low-side switches are switched on, allowing the current to flow through the rectifying diode D1. This diode provides the output voltage and also regulates the current, thus providing the rated output power. During this period, the voltage across the inductor L1 is reversed, causing the current to decrease until it reaches zero. At this point, the cycle repeats, producing a continuous output voltage and current.
