Logic translators and level shifters are electronic components used to bridge the gap between circuits that operate on different supply and logic levels due to their size or design limitations. They are commonly used in system integration of computers from different vendors or between PC and the outside world. SY100EL92ZG-TR is a type of logic translator and level shifter. Its application field and working principle will be discussed.

Application Field

SY100EL92ZG-TR is suitable for many different applications. For example, it is suitable for bridge power supply and logic level conversion between 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V, and multi-level standard. In addition, it is applicable to the voltage and logic level conversion between differential signal and single-ended signal, providing output voltage between 0.8V and 5V. Working Principle

In current mode logic(CML)output, the SY100EL92ZG-TR device uses CML technology to convert baseband single-ended signallevels into differential signal levels for transmitters. The CML driver actively generates VOD and VODN levels based on the single-ended signal levels that come from the internal signal processing circuits. There is no external biasing circuitry required - the internal circuitry actively maintains VOD, VODN and internal logic signal levels required by the CML bus. The CML receiver accepts the differential signal levels, provides signal level restoration and level translation.

In addition, CML technology also provides a common mode voltage (Vcm) on the center of the differential output pair. Vcm is determined by the circuit and is independent of the input signal. It is called CML because the differential signal of the transmitters is balanced around this voltage. When CML is used as a reference for receiver operation, the receiver can support various input signal levels without changing the biasing voltage or changing the threshold voltage. This allows the system designer to select a single receiver voltage that is compatible with multiple signal levels.

When SY100EL92ZG-TR is used in push-pull mode, the device uses push-pull technology to effectively connect the single-ended input signal to the differential output pair. The push-pull driver uses the input signal level to decide whether the gates M1 and M2 are on or off. When the gate M1 is on, the positive voltage will be output to translate the rising waveform of input signal to the output signal. On the contrary, when the gate M2 is on, the negative voltage will be output to translate the falling waveform of the input signal. The push-pull receiver operates in the same way as CML, providing signal level restoration and voltage translation.
