Tantalum capacitors are a type of capacitor that consists of a tantalum metal or an oxide anode, a dielectric oxide layer and a cathode. The oxide layer is usually made up of niobium oxide and other oxides, mixed with some traces of tantalum pentoxide. They are widely used in electronic equipment in various industries, ranging from consumer electronic devices, such as cell phones, tablets, and computers, to military, medical, automotive, and industrial applications.

The T541X107M030AT8610 is part of the family of tantalum polymer capacitors from AVX. It extracts all the advantages from tantalum and polymer, combines them in one package, providing a high capacitance within a small footprint. It is constructed on an anode made from manganese dioxide with a sintered and sputtered tantalum layer. It utilizes the polarized elements of half-cell technology, making the capacitor suitable for back-end voltage de-ratings, automatic mounting and tolling-grade operations.

Working Principle

The T541X107M030AT8610 is a solid electrolytic capacitor, meaning it works on the principle of electrolytic conduction. Capacitors work on a basic principle, in which two metal plates are separated by an insulating material. Each plate carries an electrical charge, but because the two plates are separated by the insulating material, no current is able to flow between them.

When the capacitor is exposed to an electrical current, ions in the electrolyte medium are deposited on the metal plates, forming an electrolytic interface. The deposited ions create a charge, which is opposite in polarity to the charge on the plates, thus increasing the capacitance of the capacitor.

The material used to make the metal plates and electrolyte in the T541X107M030AT8610 is designed to increase the capacitance by maximizing the number of charges held by the capacitors. The dielectric is a niobium oxide-doped tantalum pentoxide film that is formed on a sintered anode.
