Tantalum – Polymer Capacitors are constructed of a sintered anode and an electrolyte composite in a solid, flat form. This type of capacitor is considered one of the most reliable components for applications requiring high temperatures, low ESR and long operational life. The most common form of tantalum capacitor is the T550B396M060AH, which is especially popular for high temperature and high electrical stress applications.

T550B396M060AH initially makes use of a manganese dioxide cathode with an anode constructed of sintered tantalum. The capacitor utilizes an electrolyte composite that is either proprietary or a solid manganese dioxide type material. The overall construction of this type of capacitor consists of two pieces of an electronically conductive solid material separated by a thin dielectric barrier, sealed and electrically connected by two conducting leads.

This type of capacitor is typically created by placing the anode material into a combustible capsule and subjecting it to a high temperature firing process in an atmosphere of potassium chloride, which produces the sintered anode. The electrolyte is then introduced into the capsule and the cathode is flashed in, forming a solid connection between the two conducting terminals.

The capacitor is designed for use in high temperature applications, and can operate in temperatures between -55°C and +125°C. It is also able to reach extremely high current densities, resulting in a very low Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). This low ESR allows for a large capacitance value within a small form factor, making the T550B396M060AH ideal for applications requiring high capacitance in a small space.

T550B396M060AH operation is very simple and utilizes the basic principles of capacitance. A dielectric material is inserted between two electrodes and a current is applied between them. The applied current causes a charge to build up on the electrodes. As the voltage increases, the electric field between the two electrodes increases, resulting in an increase in the capacitance. The capacitance of the capacitor is then maintained as long as a desired voltage is applied between the two electrodes. When the voltage drops below a certain value, the electric field weakens, resulting in a decrease in the capacitance.

T550B396M060AH tantalum – polymer capacitor is extremely reliable and its high current density, low ESR and long operational life make it ideal for a variety of demanding applications. It is commonly used in laptop computers, medical equipment, aerospace, defense, and power supplies. This type of capacitor is also very common in automotive applications, as it is capable of operating in extreme temperatures and vibration environments.
