Working Principle

SCRs are solid-state devices that allow for current flow after the anode terminal has been given a pulse of electric current. They are called thyristors because they are composed of three layers of semiconductor material. This three-layer structure gives these devices the ability to control large amounts of current. SCRs have thyristor characteristics, meaning they have the ability to turn on or turn off power. When the SCR is turned on its gate, current starts to flow and the voltage across the device drops.

When the voltage across an SCR is increasing, the current through the SCR cannot increase until the gate is given a current pulse. This is the "firing" voltage; any voltage before this does not cause the SCR to conduct current. As soon as the firing pulse is given, the SCR conducts current and the current increases very rapidly. The SCR can remain in the conducting state, even if the gate current or voltage is reduced or removed, as long as the anode current is kept above a certain value, called the holding current. If the anode current drops below the holding current, the SCR will cease to conduct.
