Tantalum Capacitors: TAJC106M010H Application Field and Working Principle

Tantalum capacitors are among the most widely used types of electronic components in the world today, primarily due to their low cost, high reliability and long-term performance capabilities. In particular, the TAJC106M010H series of capacitors, produced by TDK, are widely used in a variety of applications, primarily due to their small size and low parasitics. This paper will discuss the application field and working principle of the TAJC106M010H series of tantalum capacitors.The TAJC106M010H series of tantalum capacitors is designed for use in applications requiring a long-term reliable performance while also reducing PCB component count. Typical applications include high-density power supplies, digital signal processing, disk drives and modem systems. They can also be used in consumer electronics, automotive and military electronic systems.The TAJC106M010H series of capacitors uses a solid manganese dioxide (MnO2) cathode and a metal anode, and features both a “false” cathode construction and hermetic sealing to improve reliability and longevity. This false cathode construction reduces the possibility of electro-migration. The TAJC106M010H series capacitors also feature a high operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and are capable of withstanding brief overvoltage transients.The working principle of a tantalum capacitor is based on the same physical law governing all types of capacitors: two conductors, separated by a dielectric material, are able to store electrical energy. The role of the dielectric material is to absorb electric charges placed on the two conductors, creating an electric field within the dielectric material. In the TAJC106M010H series capacitor, the two conductors are made from foil or wire and are separated by the MnO2 dielectric material.At the anode of a TAJC106M010H series capacitor, an oxide layer is formed from the electrons diffusing through the dielectric material. This oxide layer prevents further electron diffusion, thereby trapping the charge and maintaining the electric field between the two conductors. This electric field is blocked if the charge is removed by connecting the two conductors together.Additionally, the TAJC106M010H series capacitors have a lower voltage coefficient and temperature coefficient than other types of capacitors.
