Introduction to Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are the most widely used types of capacitors for a variety of applications and are becoming increasingly popular due to their superior size to capacitance ratio, high temperature stability and low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) characteristics. A capacitor is an electrical device that is able to store charge, also known as energy. It is made up of two conducting plates that store electrical charges. The capacitor acts as a conductor or an insulator, depending on the material used and how the capacitor is charged or discharged.Tantalum capacitors, otherwise known as tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are widely used in many electronics and electrical applications due to their superior performance. They are available in two types – solid tantalum capacitors and wet tantalum capacitors. The TAP156K035HSB is a wet tantalum capacitor. It has an anode of pure aluminum oxide (Tantalum oxide), a cathode of tantalum and a liquid electrolyte composed of Potassium Hydroxide and Nickel Chloride. This capacitor is designed for use in high frequency, high voltage applications such as switch mode power supplies. It has miniature size, low ESR and low current leakage characteristics, making it suitable to be used across high current circuits. The operation of this capacitor is based on the idea of dielectric polarization.
