Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are similar to ceramic capacitors but are manufactured with a different material. Tantalum capacitors consist of a porous anode, which is formed from a sintered pellet of tantalum powder, and is usually surrounded by solid electrolyte. TAP225M010SLZ Working Principle

When the TAP225M010SLZ is subjected to an electrical voltage, the ions from the electrolyte solution migrate to the surface of the sintered anode. This forms a double layer, across which the current flows or is stored. When this voltage is removed the anode returns to its original state and the current stops flowing, with the ions released back into the electrolyte solution.

Due to the chemical properties of the electrolyte and the anode material, the charge and discharge process of a tantalum capacitor is much faster than with a ceramic capacitor, allowing it to be used for a much wider range of applications. In addition, tantalum capacitors are much smaller and more lightweight than their ceramic counterparts, making them ideal for applications where size and weight are restricted.
