TB2300L-13 Application Field and Working Principle

Working Principle
TB2300L-13 module is composed of a main thyristor, a bypass thyristor, resistors, capacitors, gate drive circuits, and other components, as shown in Figure 1. In normal operation, the current flows through the main thyristor, and the bypass thyristor remains in the off state. When an abnormal surge current flows through the main thyristor, the bypass thyristor conducts the current, so that the current can be quickly dismissed and the power losses can be drastically reduced.
When the surge current passes through the main thyristor, the voltage drop across the main thyristor appears almost immediately due to its large impedance. The voltage drop triggers the bypass thyristor, and then the current is diverted to the low-impedance bypass thyristor instead of the high-impedance main thyristor. Thus, the current through the main thyristor is reduced to a safe level, and the junction temperature is prevented from reaching a high level and causing damage to the module.
As the surge current is quickly diverted to the bypass thyristor, the power dissipation is drastically reduced, effectively extending the life of the module. The bypass thyristor opens when the surge current disappears, and the bypass thyristor is ready for the next surge event. After each surge event, the module returns to its normal operation.
