Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) is one of the most important components of any electronic device. It is capable of regulating voltage and current, providing power efficiency and handling power protection. The TC642VPA is one commonly used PMIC which is designed specifically for driving, controlling and monitoring brushless DC motors. It offers a wide range of versatile functions and is designed with advanced, high reliability and cost optimization features.

The TC642VPA is a DC motor driver that provides up to 10A of continuous current and also features a wide operating voltage range of 6 to 36 V. It has two oscillator, an input debounce timer, a maximum frequency of 1 MHz and an over-current protection (OCP) circuit. When over-current is detected, the power to the motor is shut off, protecting the system from damages. This makes the TC642VPA an ideal choice for automotive and industrial motor control applications.

The TC642VPA has two half-bridge driver channels with low-side switch outputs. Its low-voltage PWM-driven output stage implements 2.5A load current with a minimum part count. An Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO) circuit also detects input voltage drops and disables the driver output, preventing start up during a power failure which makes it suitable for battery-operated products.

To provide the maximum levels of protection, the TC642VPA has a thermal protection circuit. This circuit detects an internal over-temperature condition and shuts down the driver output, preventing device overheating and system failure. On top of that, it includes a proprietary DE pin for controlling the switching speed for enhanced system efficiency.

The TC642VPA is controlled via two pins, the PWM (pulse width modulation) input and the ‘select’ pin. By using a PWM signal, the motor speed and direction can be accurately controlled. The motor direction is determined by the polarity of the PWM signal. When the ‘select’ pin is in the low state, the ‘0’ state controls the low-side switch. The PWM signal has a minimum frequency of 5kHz or greater; this minimizes the effects of noise interference and allows for better control accuracy.

It works effectively with a range of low-voltage to high-voltage motors and is capable of operating in -40°C to 150°C temperature range.
