Fuses are an important component of electrical systems and are responsible for protecting valuable electrical systems, components, and personnel from serious damage, or worse, due to an over-current overload. Types of fuses vary according to several factors, including the type of voltage they are designed to protect against, the size of the enclosure they are intended to be used in, and other associated application factors. One such fuse type is the TCF90.

The TCF90 fuse, specifically designed for use in medium-voltage systems, provides protection against overload and short-circuit faults, as well as responding quickly to detected faults. This type of fuse is specifically designed for surface, elevated, and padmounted installations. This particular fuse is composed of “matrix-type”fusible elements which have superior current-limiting protection at rated currents and voltages from 15KV up to 38 KV. This type of fuse is often used for main or branch circuit protection, or for protection of triple-single pole appurtenances and medium-voltage breakers.

TCF90 fuses feature several components which work together to provide an efficient and effective level of protection to electrical systems. The three main components are the body, the trigger mechanism, and the strip material. The rugged body houses the compact trigger mechanism which contains a special strip material that splits open at the predetermined ampere trip point.

The construction of the TCF90 uses an advanced metallurgy that offers superior short circuit protection and current limiting features. This metallurgical makeup limits damage to equipment and components which the fuse is protecting. Using this metallurgical blend also ensures a thermal response in the most extreme conditions, with the biggest benefit being that the fuse can blow faster, thereby offering the greatest protection.

From a working standpoint, the TCF90 fuse works in the same fashion as many other fuses. Once the current flow within the circuit reaches a level that is too high for the system, the fuse will blow, thereby providing a degree of protection not only to the system but also to the people in the vicinity. Essentially, the fuse acts as a sacrificial component, absorbing excessive amounts of current and sacrificing itself in the process.

Once the fuse begins to blow, the core of the fuse melts, thereby creating an open circuit. This limits the amount of current that continues to flow, and severely restricts further current flow from exceeding unsafe levels. Blowing the fuse does create an issue in the circuit, as the current that flows after the initial excessive amount will no longer be available, thereby breaking the circuit. However, this is a minor inconvenience compared to masking the potential of overheating components, or worse – a fire.

The TCF90 fuse is a fast-acting, matrix-type screw-in fuse, intended for surface, elevated, and pad-mounted installations. It has excellent current-limiting protection at rated current and voltage up to 38KV. The metallurgical construction of the fuse is rugged and provides superior short circuit protection and current limiting features. It is widely used for main and branch circuit protection, as well as for protection of triple-single pole appurtenances, and medium-voltage breakers. It is also tested and approved by Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL).
