The TCRT5000 has two components, an emitter and an optical receiver. The TCRT5000 operates by emitting a beam of infrared light from the LED component and measuring the amount of infrared light that reflects off of the object the light is pointed at. When the receiver detects a reflective surface the LED component is automatically turned off. The light emitted by the LED reflects off of the surface and is detected by the phototransistor, which then sends an analog output signal telling the TCRT5000 that a reflective surface has been detected.

The TCRT5000 can be used to detect a range of reflective surfaces from black to white or even reflective surfaces of various colors. It can be used to track objects, read barcodes, measure distances, detect items on a conveyor belt, build safety barriers and many other applications. It is also widely used in robotics as it can be used to detect obstacles in the robot’s path as well as to follow the edge of a line.
