Evaluation Boards - Sensors has recently developed a new type of device, the TCS3471-DB. This sensor offers a range of features that make it ideal for a variety of applications.

The TCS3471-DB is an integrated light-to-digital converter based on a Digital Light Sensor form, making it perfect for precision ambient light sensing applications. Its ability to detect light from nothing to very bright is ideal for multi-channel lighting and sensing applications. The sensor features an analogue-to-digital converter, a photodiode, a signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SND) filter and an ultra-low power amplifier. Also included in the package are spread-spectrum oscillator, integration timer, internal storage, low-jitter ADC. This makes the TCS3471-DB ideal for detecting a range of light sources, including natural sunlight, very low-intensity light sources and large-scale lighting installations.

The TCS3471-DB is particularly suitable for small form-factor applications, such as mobile phones, tablets and wearables. Its ultra-low operating power and low interference make it perfect for embedded applications. Moreover, the TCS3471-DB operates over a wide temperature range, from -30°C to 70°C, and offers tight tolerances in both ambient and operating temperatures.

In addition, the TCS3471-DB features a number of benefits such as excellent immunity to intermittent light sources, a programmable integration time, full scalability and a Multi Sensor Interface (MSI) for multiple light sources. Moreover, the TCS3471-DB also offers flexible sample-to-sample conversion time, an enhanced power management system for ultra-low power consumption, high accuracy and a high saturation level.

In terms of its working principle, the TCS3471-DB light-to-digital converter integrates light intensity and color (L,U,V) from a range of light sources. The converter is programmable for either pulsed or continuous integration mode. In the pulsed integration mode, the serial interface transfers the accumulated data from the TCS3471-DB registers, and the integration time is adjustable. The continuous integration mode can be used to detect opto-electronic switches, and the accumulated data is available at the serial interface.
