Optical sensors are part of a vast array of technological equipment designed to measure and monitor the levels of light, and more importantly the intensity and angle of the light striking them. The type of optical sensors most commonly discussed are the Photointerrupters, which, when exposed to light, will provide a signal indicating either a hit, or absence of, when something passes between the light source and the sensor. Among these are the Slot Type, and one such model of this type is the TCUT1600X01.

Some of the more common uses of the TCUT1600X01 are for detecting objects that have a narrow width, and can often be used in conjunction with other equipment, such as a conveyor belt, to effectively detect and identify parts passing along the belt, or for robotic vision applications.

Working Principle

The TCUT1600X01 works based on photosensitive detection, and is outfitted with a light-transmitting element on one end and a photosensitive element on the other. When light strikes this element, transmitter signals will be generated, this is usually in the near infrared (NIR) region of the light spectrum, and when an object, or a blank space on a conveyor belt, is detected, this signal will be interrupted, thus triggering the photosensitive element into generating a signal.

This signal will be sent to a transistors output, and typically will either be on or off. What this means is that when something passes between the transmitter element and the photosensitive element, the transistor will switch on, and will remain on until the reflecting light of the object decreases, and the photosensitive element detects this decrease, which will in turn send a signal to the transistor, thus switching it off.

This output will then be used to identify the type and size of object that just passed by, as well as give an indication of the speed at which it passed, and in effect, allow the detecting system to ‘sense’ the object.
