Working Principle

The operating voltage of TLC5916IDR is from 2.7V to 5.5V and the output current can be up to 25mA. The current of each output channel can be adjusted independently by a single external resistor. The maximum adjustable current range is from 0.2mA to 10mA. The IC also integrates an output enable/disable logic circuit and a reset/shift logic circuit. The output enable logic circuit is able to power down the shift register while keeping the integrated circuit (IC) active, so that it can be used in applications with frequent current adjustments.

The reset/shift logic circuit of TLC5916IDR allows the output current of each channel to be adjusted in sequence. A reset signal changes the internal state of the IC and triggers the adjustment. When the adjustment is completed, a “shift” instruction is given to trigger the adjustment of the next channel. This process is repeated until the adjustment of all channels is completed.

TLC5916IDR also integrates a short-circuit detection function. When output current is close to 0mA for 2 consecutive outputs, the IC will automatically reduce the output current of already shifted outputs to prevent load short-circuit. On the other hand, the IC aIso supports over current protection and thermal shut-down protection.
