The TLC5928PWP is an LED driver IC specifically designed to drive Linear, Segmented and Matrix LED displays with up to 24 pins (18 Segments and 5 Common Pins). It is designed for LED displays with LED brightness pre-set by a user-programmable persistence adjustment for minimum power consumption, better performance and accurate displays.
The TLC5928PWP is a PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) which is the ideal combined solution of voltage regulation, current regulators and power converters intended to reliably supply the power to microcontroller and system peripherals. PMICs are often integrated into systems and are especially popular choices in the field of LED Drivers due to their built-in features which make operation particularly easy and efficient. The TLC5928PWP is designed to supply power to and control up to 18 segment LEDs and 5 commonanodes, featuring a low current consumption and pre-setmable user-defined brightness for saving power.
The TLC5928PWP operates with a supply voltage range between 2.7V up to 5.5V and a low quiescent current of 0.6uA, which makes it an ideal solution for maximizing battery lifetime in portable Electronic Devices. It also offers an input circuitry featuring proprietary improved auto-shutdown threshold to reduce power consumption, along with single-wire transfer, key-press detection and adjustable LED peak current limitation. Furthermore, the device features also an adjustable LED flash timing and LED off-timer.
The TLC5928PWP contains two user-programmable registers, the Programmable I/O and the Geometry register. The Programmable I/O register toggles the functionality of pins I/O1~I/O5 and selects single or multiplex input, while the Geometry Register is used to define segment and common pin combinations. This allows the user to customize the device for an application without the need of external components.
The internal circuitry of the TLC5928PWP is designed to control LED power supply and LED brightness. The LED power supply consists of a 40 kHz oscillator, a charge-pump, a low-dropout regulator, and a power-on reset function to independently turn each LED channel on and off. Furthermore, the present LED illumination is adjustable by a user-programmable persistence adjustment which adjusts the operating time of the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) switch on each channel.
The TLC5928PWP also ensures high accuracy and quality displays by controlling the current flow to different segments and common pins in different groups simultaneously with a load-balancing algorithm. This allows the system to maintain higher brightness with a lower duty cycle in a stable display. Furthermore, programmable digital logic functions can be programmed and activated into each channel, as well as programmable internal addresses.
The TLC5928PWP can offer the user the advantage of a single chip solution, minimizing the external components needed for controlling the LEDs. This translates into lower costs and a more compact design which can reduce power loss, along with faster time to market, faster diagnostics and maintenance. The device is also compliant to ESD Level 2 and enhance plus level EMCs/EMI requirements.
