Solid-state magnetic sensors are of wide variety found in various industries, characterized by features such as digital interpretation, no moving parts, and highly sensitive measurement capability. One such member of the magnetic sensor family is the TLE4906KHTSA1, a device well suited for applications such as motorized door locks, security systems, and over-current protection.
The TLE4906KHTSA1 is an integrated circuit incorporating a hall-effect element, a precision comparator circuit, and an output transistor providing automatic reset after an interfering field has been seen. It has four pins; VDD (power supply), VLED (LED voltage), OUT (output) and GND (ground). When the device is exposed to a magnetic field of the proper polarity, it will detect it and output a Logic High signal at the OUT pin (current sinking state).
The working principle of the TLE4906KHTSA1 Sensor is based on the Hall Effect. This phenomenon in which a varying magnetic field will create an electromotive force (circuit voltage differential) perpendicular to both the current flow and direction of the applied magnetic field was discovered by Edwin Hall in 1879. When this sensor is placed in a magnetic field, the magnetic flux will cause the electrons to drift in the semiconductor away from the source of the field, creating a voltage across the contacts of the device. The voltage will be proportional to the strength of the magnetic field, and can be accurately measured.
The output signal is based on comparing the measured voltage to an internal reference voltage. When the voltage reaches a certain level, the output will switch from a low to a high logic level, staying in this state until the magnetic field drops down to a predetermined threshold. This makes the TLE4906KHTSA1 ideal for applications that require a slip-free, hysteresis-free switching function (i.e. motorized door locks).
In addition to its use in motorized door locks, the TLE4906KHTSA1 is also suitable for over-current protection applications. In this type of application, the device is set up to switch off when current flowing through it reaches a predetermined threshold. As the current increases, the internal magnetic field of the device is also increased, thus triggering the output to switch. This in turn will cause the circuit to be safely disconnected, preventing further damage from occurring.
