The TLE49990HAXA1 is a magnetic sensor IC that forms part of a linear, compass IC family. In terms of its application, this device is most widely used in automotive and consumer applications.

The TLE49990HAXA1 magnetic sensor works by detecting variations in the magnetic field around it thanks to its integrated Hall element. This integrated Hall element can detect angular changes in the field that are in the range of +/- 100 degrees with a resolution of 0.1 degrees. In this way, the device can measure direction, magnitude and orientation of the field.

To enable the TLE49990HAXA1 to detect variations in the magnetic field, the device is connected to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) using a two-wire protocol. This protocol further requires an external clock to control the sampling frequency and enable the device to remain in a low power state. Additionally, the device has no internal clock, therefore the external source has to be able to generate a clock having a frequency of up to 50kHz.

The two-wire protocol used by the sensor comprises an address/command and a data line. The address/command line is used to initiate a new measurement cycle and receive the information from the device. The data line is used to provide the measurement data in the form of a 12-bit value.

In terms of its features, the TLE49990HAXA1 magnetic sensor can operate from -40C to +85C and allows for up to 16 address selectable devices. The device also features a brown-out detector which monitors the supply voltage in order to detect when it drops below a user-defined level; this allows the device to reset itself in order to prevent damage to the internal circuits. The sensor is packed in a 4-pin DFN-2.8 package.

The TLE49990HAXA1 is ideal for applications which require a sensitive, low power and low cost magnetic sensor. Some examples include automotive and consumer applications such as navigation systems, direction finders, electronic compasses, air flow sensors, and door lock systems.
