Optoisolators are electronic components used to isolate one circuit from one another while allowing information to be exchanged between them. The Optoisolator family includes devices with various output components and switching mechanisms, the Transistor, Photovoltaic Output family being one of them. The TLP759 specifically falls under this family and will be discussed in depth in the following article.

The TLP759 (D4-TP1, J, F) is a 4-pin photocoupler consisting of an infrared LED, a dual phototransistor, an Isolation Resistor and an Isolation Barrier comprising 8-250Vdc travel voltage. This model in particular is designed specific to the JIS-C-7802 standards and has a dielectric strength of 5000Vrms. The optimal operating temperature range for the TLP759 is -30 to +100°C with a storage temperature range of -40 to 85°C.

The TLP759 is configured in such a way that it serves as a power driver, operating in switching mode with low saturation voltage and low current consumption. The LED driver of the TLP759 can be driven with 12V for a maximum pulse frequency of 500Hz. The device can sink a maximum current of from -150 to 200mA and can draw up to a total of 65mW of power.

When it comes to the TLP759’s application field it is primarily applied to switching mode designs as a power driver for all kinds of power electronics function such as power supplies, DC/DC converters, AC inverters and high power switching but this specific isolation module is particularly used in a variety of systems including warning signal, measurement systems, communication systems, electronic controlled systems etc.

Now tackling the working mechanism of the TLP759: starting off the TLP759 consists of an infrared LED termed as the input side of the Optoisolator, when this infrared LED receives a voltage signal current flows through it and the LED emits its own form of light- electromagnetic energy. Moving on to the phototransistor which is recombined to the infrared LED, this phototransistor senses the electromagnetic waves emitted by the LED and currents run through it to the output side of the Optoisolator. The Isolation Resistor ensures that there is no direct current between both circuits and finally the Isolation barrier provides isolation of a minimum of 5000V for safety.

In conclusion the TLP759 is one of the most popular members of the Optoisolator Transistor Photovoltaic Output family of isolation modules due to its efficiency and useful application field. It has a simple but effective functionality of information sharing, signal conversion and an effective isolation of circuits. Its simple yet versatile characteristics make it a great fit for various electronic systems across a wide range of industries.
