PMIC - AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers

The power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is an integrated circuit designed to manage a device or systems power needs. Prime examples of PMIC usage include turning an isolated battery or AC power supply into other forms of power, such as DC power, as well as providing voltage regulation on sensitive analog circuits. A PMIC can provide overload protection, sequencing, sequencing and sequencing for a system, as well as more complex functions, like thermal regulation and power saving modes.PMICs come in many varieties, including AC/DC converters, offline switchers, linear regulator, buck regulators, and step up/step down regulators. In order to maximize the efficiency of the converters and the performance of the device, manufacturers generally combine the different types of PMICs, such as using step up/step down regulators in conjunction with buck regulators or other PMICs.

AC/DC Converters

An AC/DC converter, or “rectifier”, is used to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This is typically done by converting AC voltage to a DC voltage that is more suitable for a device, such as a laptop or mobile device. These converters are often found in wall chargers, power supplies, and battery chargers. The most common type of AC/DC converter is a diode bridge rectifier. This rectifier is made up of four diodes arranged in a bridge configuration. When the voltage is applied, the diodes will conduct, turning the AC input into a pulsating DC. This type of rectifier does not provide voltage regulation, which can be an issue for some applications. For example, laptops needs clean DC for the logic board, and a variable-voltage buck regulator is better suited for these applications.

Offline Switchers

An offline switcher or “off-line converter” is a type of PMIC that uses a switching power circuit. This type of converter takes in AC input and either steps it down or steps it up to a higher or lower voltage, respectively. Offline switchers can provide higher output power with greater efficiency than a simple diode bridge rectifier. The main component of an offline switcher is a power transistor, which is used to switch the AC input on and off thousands of times per second. By doing so, the power transistor can store the energy in a small inductor, allowing the output voltage to be regulated. Offline switchers are more efficient than linear regulators, but are more complicated.Offline switchers can come in a variety of types, such as buck regulators, boost regulators, buck-boost regulators, and flyback converters. Common applications of these converters include battery chargers and LED lighting.

Conclusion

PMICs are critical components in power supplies and battery chargers, as they can convert AC or DC to the voltage needed for a device, as well as provide voltage regulation, overload protection, sequencing, and many other functions. The two most common types of PMICs are AC/DC converters and offline switchers. AC/DC converters are typically used to convert AC to DC, while offline switchers are used to convert a higher or lower voltage, or to provide better efficiency. PMICs are often combined to achieve the desired power management solution.
