TPS23751PWP is a Power over Ethernet (PoE) controller that integrates a 30 V, 4.5 A power MOSFET into a 12-pin TSSOP package. This device provides a cost-effective solution for systems designers who require a low-cost, yet high-performance single-chip solution for powering devices over Ethernet. The TPS23751PWP supports IEEE 802.3af compliant PoE as well as Cisco’s proprietary PoE systems. It is capable of supplying up to 15.4 W of power while operating in an extremely small footprint on the printed circuit board.

The TPS23751PWP operates in two modes: Class 0 Class 1 and Class 2. In Class 0 mode, the device provides 15.4 W of power for Category 4 ends (e.g., VoIP phones, IP phones, network cameras…etc). In Class 1/2 mode, the device provides up to 12.95 W of power for Category 3/4/5 ends including Ethernet nodes, notebook computers, wireless access points, and IP cameras.

TPS23751PWP works with two sources of information in order to operate properly: inputs from the side of the Powered Device (PD) and control signals generated internally. The device monitors the Voltage Interface (VI) current sense pin to detect the presence of a PD. If the VI pin current goes above the Class Detection current of 6.6 mA, the device will then enter into Searching mode. In Searching mode, the device will continually sample the voltage level on the Port Data pair in order to detect the presence of a valid PoE signature. Once a valid signature is detected, the device will then begin to classify the PD and accordingly adjust the output voltage level.

The TPS23751PWP employs several algorithms to ensure the highest level of protection for both the Powered End (PE) and the PD. It monitors the voltage on the VI pin, the voltage on the Port Data pair, the current on the VI pin, and the ambient temperature of the system to ensure that the PD is not over supplied. Additionally, the device implements an auto shut-off feature that will enable the device to shut off the power if it detects an overload or short circuit fault on the PD.
