TheTPS2376D is a single channel fully integrated Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Controller that supports both the IEEE802.3af– and IEEE802.3at (Type1/2) standards. It offers a controlled current path to the powered device (PD) and provides Class 0 to Class 3 power classification, full isolation using Digitally Controlled Isolation (DCI) technology and end of line (PoE) detection.

TheTPS2376D comprises of a DC input side circuit, an isolation controller and a DC output side circuit. On the DC input side, the DC supply is filtered and voltage is regulated to a required level for the internal circuit. An 8-bit DAC is used for the adjustment of the max current load of the PD. Another 8-bit DAC is used to adjust the current load on the output side, ensuring the load is capable of efficiently delivering the required current.

The isolation controller ensures that the output side DC bus voltage of the regulator is isolated from the input side of the regulator. It is controlled by an isolation switch that is driven by an on-chip oscillator. The oscillator frequency is accurately controlled by the fractional-N phase-lock loop (PLL) circuit such that the frequency is kept within the safety-certified range of the isolation components.

On the DC output side, the DC supply is isolated by a main switching transistor of the LOW-SIDE switch. This main switch is responsible to control the maximum current which is determined by the voltage and current setting of the DACs. The output current is limited by a current sense resistor in series with the output of the switching transistor. A low resistance sense resistor reduces the voltage drop and increases the accuracy of the current measurement. The bias voltage is generated by an on-chip Low-Drop-Out (LDO) regulator.

TheTPS2376D includes a Bipolar-Junction-Transistor (BJT)-based PoE-detection circuit. The fuse box and bridge circuit for the Ports A and B are implemented in the same channel, therefore it supports a 2-port system without any problems. The circuit accuracy is maintained across a broad temperature range by adjusting the voltage level with a temperature-compensated reference.

TheTPD2376D could be used in numerous applications such as residential and commercial power over ethernet systems including PDs, routers, switches and gateways. It can also be used in other applications such as telecommunications, industrial and embedded systems, home automation, and medical instrumentation, where PoE is an increasingly popular method for supplying power.
