Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are the devices that enable efficient power delivery and management. They are responsible for distributing the energy from energy sources, managing the current flow, and controlling the power to the parts of the circuit. TPS2549RTET is a high-side, single-channel power switch appilcation, which includes an integrated low-termization FET for load. The device is mainly used in automotive battery supply, system wide on and off control and other application fields.The working principle of the TPS2549RTET is based on the single-ended open loop structure. It consists of a power NMOSFET and its controller. When the EN pin is LOW, the device is disabled and the load can’t receive the supply current. When the EN pin is HIGH, the PMOSFET is connected to the output voltage Vcc, and the load can now be powered. The load current normally passes through the low RDSON NMOSFET to reduce energy loss. The NMOSFET can be operated either in the high-side mode or the low-side mode. When operating in the high-side mode, the switch includes a pass-FET for low impedance connection of the load and protection of the MOSFET from reverse voltage. When operated in the low-side mode, the pass-FET is not used and the current is sensed through an external sense resistor between the MOSFET output and ground.The device also features thermal protection, reverse battery protection and over-current protection. For the thermal protection, an over-temperature detection circuit is added to the device, which shutdowns the device opertaions if the junction temperature exceeds its intent. In addition, the reverse battery protection prevents the device from being switched on in reverse polarity condition. The over-current protection circuit is also included which limits the load current to a pre-determined safe value.In summary, the TPS2549RTET is a single-channel power switch application which is mainly used in automotive battery supply and system wide on/off control. It has reverse battery protection, thermal protection and over-current protection features built-in. The device operates either in high-side or low-side mode and the load current is sensed through the RDSON NMOSFET or an external sense resistor.
