TPS60120PWP is a fully integrated high efficiency DC-DC buck boost regulator with high peak current and low quiescent current. The main application fields for this IC are industrial, computing, host and mobile applications such as battery-operated systems, tablets, smartphones and base stations. The TPS60120PWP regulating chip integrates several important functions onboard, such as charge pump, step-down converter, step-up converter and compensate, making it ideal for low power battery-operated systems as it offers protection from overcurrent, overvoltage and battery over-discharge.

The TPS60120PWP maximizing the output power by transitioning between buck and boost modes, while adapting the power level in order to match the load requirement. Depending on the input voltage, the TPS60120PWP offers two mode selection, the Buck-Boost and the Buck modes. The working principle of the TPS60120PWP is ultimately based on the DC-DC buck-boost converter. The inductor also allows for smooth transitions between buck (step-down) and boost (step-up) modes based on the following principles:

  • Buck Mode: In the Buck mode, the output voltage is lower than the input voltage. The inductor carries most of the energy conversion, so when switching to the Buck mode, the inductor rapidly ramps up the current and stores energy as an increasing magnetic field strength. As the load current is increased, the inductor’s current decreases.
  • Boost Mode: In the Boost mode, the output voltage is higher than the input voltage. To achieve this, the inductor absorbs and stores energy from the input voltage, and then quickly ramps up current as the load decreases. As the load draws current, the inductor’s current drops as it releases the stored energy.
