The TPS60202DGS is a DC-DC Switching Regulator from Texas Instruments Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) Solution families, which is optimized for portable applications operating from one or two cell Li-Ion batteries.

This device integrates three main functions into a tiny package: a 400mA LDO linear regulator, a 500mA step-down DC-DC switching regulator, and an adjustable linear regulator.

The TPS60201DGS is optimized to enable ultra-low quiescent current operation, which gives designers freedom to optimize the power consumption in their designs. Furthermore, the device has precise enabled/disabled states with very low leakage currents.

Working Principle

The TPS60201DGS offers a regulated output voltage with the primary voltage feedback derived from the output. This output can be controlled by two main methods: PWM mode and pulse skipping mode.

In PWM mode, the device regulates the output voltage by constantly comparing the voltage feedback with a precision reference voltage. When the feedback voltage drops below the reference, the internal PWM controller will turn on the internal PMOS switch, thus outputting a regulated voltage.

In pulse skipping mode, the device regulates the output voltage by gradually reducing the on-time of the internal PMOS switch. When the output voltage drops below the reference, the pulse skipping controller will turn on the PMOS switch for a longer duration until the output voltage is stabilized, thus allowing for a higher efficiency mode.

The device has been designed to work with either single-cell or two-cell Li-Ion batteries, and can handle a maximum input voltage up to 7V. The device can be programmed to a maximum output voltage of 5V, and is stable with most output capacitors often used in portable applications.

To maximize efficiency, the TPS60201DGS has an advanced power save control loop which automatically changes the operating mode of the device depending on the load resistance. For low loads, the device will switch to pulse skipping mode, thus allowing for higher efficiency at light loads.

In addition, the device has integrated safety features such as automatic over-voltage and over-current protection, as well as thermal protection. Finally, the device has an enable and soft-start pin, to control the start-up sequence and allow for easy disabling of the output when required.
