TPS61050EVM-215 Application Field and Working Principle
The TPS61050EVM-215 is an evaluation module designed for use with TI\'s TPS61050 switched-mode DC-DC convertor. The device features low quiescent current, high power density and wide input voltage. This evaluation module provides users with an efficient boost backend for LED applications. It can be used for both indoor and outdoor lighting design, such as downlights, spotlights, and garden lights. The evaluation board implements TPS61050 and its peripherals for current or voltage monitoring, an SPI interface for parameter configurations, with additional features such as an enable pin and a UVLO pin.
The TPS61050EVM-215 supports input voltages ranging from 5V-45V, and can output a 0.7V-36V regulated voltage at up to 1.2A. The high power density, low quiescent current, and wide input voltage range makes the application more efficient in many fields of LED lighting. The evaluation module enables users to field-program and perform selected tests quickly, allowing them to validate the circuitry, monitor current and voltage, and perform other tests.
As a boost DC-DC converter, the TPS61050EVM-215 is designed with synchronous rectification and peak current boosting in order to minimize the total conduction losses of the system, thus reducing the overall MOSFET and diode power dissipation. The total power conversion efficiency of the board can reach up to 96%. Ohmic losses of the switches can be minimized by adjusting the on-time of the internal switch. The working principle of the TPS61050EVM-215 can be divided into two parts: the energy transference from input to output and the control scheme implementation. When the power switch is enabled, energy will be transferred from the input to the output under the control of the MOSFET, until the output voltage reaches the programmed set point. At the same time, the power switch will be disabled to terminate the conduction path and to initiate the reverse transfer cycle. To maintain output stability, the power switch will turn off to reduce switching power loss, while the feedback system will regulate the output voltage by comparing the feedback voltage with the programmed target voltage. Once the comparison indicates a deviation, the power switch will turn back on to resume energy transfer until the feedback voltage reaches its set point.
