The Texas Instruments TPS61093 is a high-efficiency, synchronous DC-DC step-up converter which operates from a 2.7 V to 5.5 V input voltage range. It consists of a transconductance error amplifier, voltage reference, NB/ON control circuitry, driver, constant frequency current-mode PWM control, two N-channel MOSFETs and two P-channel MOSFETs.

This device can give a user adjustable output voltage up to 24 V and can deliver up to 880 mA. One of the key features of the TPS61093 device is that it allows fixed frequency current mode operation up to a 1 MHz switching frequency and its low quiescent current of typically only 8.2 µA. Thermal shutdown, short circuit protection and an undervoltage lockout make the device highly reliable and easy to use.

Application fields

The TPS61093 is primarily intended for products where space, weight and efficiency are at a premium. It is well suited for driving LED backlights in portable devices, ultra-low-power systems, with its high efficiency, low quiescent current, and excellent line and load regulation, it is also ideal for providing a regulated output voltage in supply rails, communication systems, distributed power architectures and other battery-powered applications.

Working principle

The TPS61093 is a wide input voltage, synchronous step-up converter with external compensation, using current-mode control and a constant-frequency PWM control. It uses the inductor current, sensed at the switching terminal, to switch the two external N-channel MOSFETs. This inductor current and the voltage drop on the internal pull-up resistor set the maximum current limit value.

As for the output voltage feedback, it is used for loop compensation and maintaining the output voltage at the desired value. The PWM control compares the output voltage feedback with the internal reference voltage and adjusts the switching period accordingly. The combination of the transconductance amplifier, voltage reference and error amplifier forms the internal loop compensation.

The reference voltage has a constant 2.1 V tolerance over the temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. It also features an enable pin which can be used to further reduce consumption in standby or shutdown. It can quickly ramp up or down its output voltage due to the fast load transient response and a minimum of external components.
