The TPS61230DRCR is a low quiescent current, high efficiency and cost-effective synchronous step-down DC-DC switching regulator. Featuring integrated FETs and high speed control loop, the TPS61230DRCR offers a fast transient response, excellent line, load and temperature regulation, as well as a low output voltage ripple.

The TPS61230DRCR is a synchronous buck converter which regulates output voltage from a range of 4.5V to 15V. It integrates two FETs and a high-speed control loop for a product with low quiescent current (278uA in no-load conditions). It is designed to provide a high peak efficiency of up to 95%. The device operates at a switching frequency of 1.5MHz to 3MHz, and its wide output voltage range of 4.5V and 15V makes it especially suitable for use with low-voltage systems and battery-operated designs proportioned with low input voltage.

Working Principle

The TPS61230DRCR utilizes a synchronous buck switching topology to efficiently regulate output voltage. When the regulator is enabled, both integrated FETs switch on and the inductor current ramps up linearly; the input voltage is converted to the output voltage through the inductor. When the inductor current reaches its programmed level, the controller turns off the low side FET and the high side FET begins to turn on. This forces the inductor current to discharge through the output capacitor until the current reaches its programmed value, then the FETs switch on again and begin a new cycle.

The TPS61230DRCR also uses a voltage loop to regulate its output voltage. The voltage loop uses an internal voltage reference, an error amplifier and a comparator to control the duty cycle of the regulator.
