TPS61253AYFFT is a high-efficiency, low-noise, wide-input, single-input/single-output DC/DC synchronous buck regulator with input voltage range from 3.2V to 20V and output voltage fixed to 1.2V. It is designed for supplying power to applications such as mobile phones, noteboooks and portable electronics, where low noise, high efficiency and small size are desired. TPS61253AYFFT is offered in 20-pin thin QFN package with advanced output current and short-circuit protection. It also contains a 1-MHz PWM programmable frequency and a power-on reset pin.

Working Principle

The TPS61253AYFFT is based on synchronous buck converter with maximum efficiency of over 95% that enables the system to use fewer external components and still maintain excellent thermal performance. This device operates in switching mode, so it requires an external control circuit or an oscillator to control the frequency and duty cycle of the switch. This regulator is capable of operating in PWM or PFM mode, with adjustable output current limit, thermal monitor protection and soft-start.

When Vin is applied, the controller monitors and controls the internal switch to ground the inductor, allowing leackage current to flow from the output. When the switch is open, the inductor stores energy, enabling the output voltage to equal Vin. The switching action is such that Vin minus a logic drop is limited to the output voltage. The rate of change of the inductors current during the switching cycle is controlled by the duty cycle and the switching frequency. The duty cycle is programmable, allowing a leaner peak current for higher efficiency and better performance in the discontinuous conduction mode.

Application Field

The TPS61253AYFFT is suitable for applications such as mobile phones, desktops, LCD displays and other portable electronic devices that require wide input voltage range and fast transient response with low output noise and possibility to adjust its output current limits. This device features an ultra low standby current of just 0.5μA and allows lower dynamic input current than traditional regulators. With an input voltage range of 3.2V to 20V, it can easily cover the most popular voltage ranges in portable applications.

TPS61253AYFFT is well-suited for applications powered from a single Li-Ion cell, where fast transient response and very low output noise are required. For example, in a 5V LCD supply a +5V output can be achieved from a single Li-Ion cell. It can also be used in 3 cell Li-Ion applications, where the switching frequency of 1MHz is an advantage.
