Working Principle:
The TPS61291DRVR is a high-efficiency, high-density and low-noise switching regulator DC–DC converter IC. It is a synchronous fixed frequency buck-boost DC–DC converter that utilizes an external resistor to program the operating frequency, logic word and base on-time. It also offers an integrated over-current protection (OCP), a thermal shutdown protection (TSD), current-limit protection (CLP) and reverse current protection (RCP) provides excellent system reliability and protection. The power switching of the device is configured for use in both buck and boost topologies.
The device operates with a switching frequency from 200 kHz to 700 kHz. Its current-mode (CM) control produces fast loop response and tolerance to line-load conditions. The maximum duty cycle is set by Rprogram and the minimum duty cycle will be approximately 70%. During the on-time, the inductor current ramps up to an adjustable Ipeak current. When the inductor current reaches Ipeak, the upper MOSFET is turned off and the inductor current then discharges through the DRAIN to the load. The peak current mode and fixed frequency operation provide a fast transient response and excellent line-load regulation. The device is capable of operating with a 4.5 V to 22 V input voltage range.
The device\'s integrated over-current protection (OCP) feature limits the output current at the peak current limit sets by the Ipeak current. The TSD feature protects the device from over-temperature conditions. The device also features a current-limit protection (CLP) to limit the start-up current. The reverse current protection (RCP) feature provides protection against damage to the output inductor and power pass transistor during open-circuit brown-out conditions. These integrated protections make it an ideal choice of DC–DC converter in applications like cellular handsets, PDAs, WLANs and digital still cameras (DSCs).
The EN pin of the device is used to enable and disable the output voltage, when the EN pin is pulled low, the output voltage is disabled and pulled high to enable the output voltage. The PGOOD pin will indicate the status of the output voltage. When the voltage is in good range and in regulation, the PGOOD pin is pulled high and when the output voltage is outside regulation or not good, the PGOOD pin is pulled low.
The device PWM converter comes with a synchronizing pin for synchronization with an external clock signal. Synchronizing the internal oscillator to an external signal will reduce power dissipation and EMI noise. The output voltage is programmable through an external resistor Rprogram that connects between the VOUT and GND pins and sets the maximum duty cycle. The minimum duty cycle is approximately 70% and the output voltage is determined by the ratio of the VOUT and ground pins according to the following equation:
Vout = [Vrprogram * ( (1 - 70%) / 70%) ] + V FB
The operating, switching frequency, and logic word is programmed using a single transistor. The switching frequency of the TPS61291DRVR is selected by the resistor connected between the SYNC pin and the ground. It can be adjusted from 200 kHz to 700 kHz with a resistor value ranging from 10 kΩ to 150 kΩ.
