TPS62042DGQRG4 is a tiny package DC-DC switching regulator which can provide an output current up to 2A. It is designed to operate within an input voltage range of 2.3V to 5.5V. This regulator can be configured as a high efficiency step-down DC-DC regulator with up to 96.6% efficiency, as well as a high efficiency step-up DC-DC regulator.

Working Principle

The TPS62042DGQRG4 consists of two power MOSFETs, input capacitor and output capacitor. There is an internal error amplifier, a reference voltage and an oscillator that works to control the switching frequency of the MOSFETs. Internal synchronous rectification prevents the power loss caused by the Schottky diode. During the normal operation, the MOSFETs will turn on-off alternately and create a voltage that is lower than the input voltage. Then setup control feedback regulation will allow the MOSFETS to accurately control the output voltage according to the specific needs.

When enabled, the input switch will close, the inductor will carry the output current to circulate and steadily increase the current in the output capacitor. When the voltage across the output switch is greater than the reference voltage, the output switch will shut off. The inductor current will flow back to the input capacitor and the voltage across the output capacitor will be stabilized, and energy is transferred from the input capacitor to the output capacitor. The balance between the inductor current increase and the switch on time determines the output voltage. The output voltage is fixed by the voltage reference and can be set by the external resistor, or programmatically by the logic you employed.

The TPS62042DGQRG4 also contains many add-on features such as over-temperature protection, under-voltage lockout, and over-voltage protection. What’s more, the device can be configured as a 2A step-down or step-up converter. This makes it a very versatile component for a variety of applications.
