TPS62081DSGR Application Field and Working Principle

The TPS62081DSGR is a single-stage Step-down DC/DC converter that is designed for high-efficiency portable applications. It integrates a buck DC/DC converter with an integrated FET and is based on a proprietary architecture and control algorithm. This combination reduces component count, board space, and bill of materials (BOM) cost for an end-product.

The TPS62081DSGR is rated, tested and characterized up to 5A output current and up to 8V fixed output voltage. It operates with an input voltage between 4.5V and 20V, and can operate with input voltages as low as 2.6V over-temperature. The TPS62081DSGR includes an adjustable output voltage (1.8V to 5.5V), external soft-start, PGOOD status, and comprehensive protection features. Working Principle

The TPS62081DSGR is a single-stage buck DC/DC converter with integrated FET. The buck converter offers the highest power-conversion efficiency, since it only has a switching element and a diode in the power path. The DC/DC converter uses a stable, wide-range control loop to provide voltage regulation over the input range with the least amount of loop compensation components.

The buck converter\'s output power stage comprises an integrated FET and a low-loss Schottky diode. In steady-state operation, the high-side transistor of the power stage switches alternately at a certain frequency and duty cycle so that the output remains constant. The internal feedback (compensation) loop of the buck converter controls the output voltage by regulating the PWM duty cycle according to the measurements of the feedback voltage. This ensures that the output is always in line with the value set.

In addition to the feedback voltage, other protection circuits such as over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, thermal overload protection and over-current protection are also included. This ensures that the device operates safely in all applications.
