A PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a key element for electronic systems by reducing power consumption and extending the battery life of portable electronics. Voltage Regulators, especially DC DC Switching Regulators, are one of the main categories of PMICs. The TPS62202DBVT is a DC-DC switchingstep-downconverter integrated circuit with very low quiescent current. It has excellent light load efficiency, excellent output current and thermal protection, and a wide input voltage range of 2.9 V to 24 V. Working PrincipleThe TPS62202DBVT circuit enables low power conversion without compromising live performance. It is based on a current-mode step-down converter, which works on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control principle. When power is inserted and the EN/UVLO pin is set to logic high, the circuit will begin to regulate the output voltage. The regulation is performed by the control logic, Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) and compensation circuit, which allows for very fast response for voltage and currentthresholds and built-in transient protection.
The PWM control circuit uses a shutdown comparator with a comparator referenced to the internal VREF pin and a second comparator referenced to the output voltage (FB pin) to compare the two voltages. When the feedback voltage exceeds the VREF voltage, the PWM comparator will issue a logic low output, thus turning off the internal switch. This causes the output current for the inductor to ramp down to zero, thus controlling the output voltage. To ensure the output voltagestays in regulation, the PWM control circuitsampling time is twice the predetermined fixed frequency.
The shutdown comparator compares the voltage input, particularly the enable pin (EN/UVLO), with a user adjustable trip point at the prescribed oscillator frequency to limit the duty cycle of the internal switch. When the voltage drops below the threshold voltage, the output of the shutdown comparator will go low, disabling the internal switch and thus shutting down the regulator.
The current sense circuit (which includes the current sense amplifier and the oscillator)is very important to the functioning of the TPS62202DBVT. It is used to detect overcurrent conditions, that is, when the output current exceed the maximum level determined by the user. Whenthis occurs, the circuit shuts down before damage can occur. This shut-down is done by monitoring the voltage at the CSP/CSPN pin with respect to ground. When the voltage output at this pin is equal to the current sense amplifier reference voltage, the circuit will shut down.
The thermal protection circuit is another important feature of the TPS62202DBVT. This circuit will shut down the regulator when the temperature of the device exceeds its specified maximum level, thus preventing damage. It is based on the measurement ofthe voltage output of the INTH pin, which is compared to a user adjustable trip point. When the temperature reaches the pre-defined maximum, the output ofthe thermal protection circuit goes high and the device shuts down.
