TPS622xx series of integrated switch mode buck converters are designed for low output voltage and high current applications. It provides various features such as programmable soft-start, adjustable current limit, thermal shutdown, over-voltage protection and more. The TPS62224DDCR is one of the most common DC-DC buck converters in the TPS622xx series. It is a four-switch buck converter with integrated control and logic blocks, which is designed to offer high-efficiency adapters and other power supplies.

The TPS62224DDCR offers a wide range of applications such as battery powered system, charger, industrial, automotive and communication systems. It can provide adjustable output voltages from 0.6V to 2.5V, with a maximum output current of 4A. It has a wide range of input voltage capabilities (from 3.5V to 25V). The high switching frequency (1.2MHz typical) allows for small, efficient inductors and capacitors, thus decreasing the size of the entire design. Working Principle

The TPS62224DDCR has a maximum duty cycle of 100%. When the converter is operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), the output will be regulated at a voltage that is lower than its voltage setting. The power stage of the converter is composed of \'High-Side\' and \'Low-Side\' power MOSFETs, connected in an H-bridge configuration. To ensure a correct operation of the device, two clock signals are used, FSW and CSW which are further divided from the incoming clock. The two signals control the switching speed of the two FETs. The operating mode can also be selected according to the application, in either discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) or continuous conduction mode (CCM).

When the converter is operating in DCM mode, the output voltage will be different that its Vout setting voltage. As a result, the synchronous rectifier (Low-Side MOSFET) will be used in this mode. The control block of the device consists of an error amplifier, a light load detection module, an under-voltage lockout, current limited and thermal shut down as well as logic and biasing circuits. This block provides information to the flow control module and feedback to the power stage. The flow control module is composed of an error amplifier and a PWM comparator. The error amplifier outputs a reference voltage to the PWM comparator, that provides the information if the High-Side MOSFET should be turned off or on.

On the other hand, when the converter is in CCM mode, the output will be regulated at its Vout setting voltage and the synchronous rectifier will not be used. In this particular mode, the power MOSFET switching frequency will be higher than in DCM mode described above. The light load detection module provides automatic operation mode transition from DCM to CCM mode according to the load current, optimizing the behavior of the converter, resulting in lower overall Quiescent Current (IQ).

In addition, the device offers several protection features ensuring a reliable operation, including an adjustable peak current limit, an adjustable Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and thermal shutdown. The Peak current limit sets the maximum current that the converter can deliver. This feature helps to reduce the possibility of current overload due to short-circuit conditions. Furthermore, the OVP prevents damage to the downstream circuits caused by excessive output voltage. This voltage is adjustable through the external OVP pin. Finally, the thermal shutdown feature disables the device if the junction temperature exceeds 150°C, preventing the possibility of damage in high temperature conditions.
