TPS62353YZGT Application Field and Working Principle

TPS62353YZGT is a high-efficiency small-footprint switching regulator with integrated high-side MOSFET suitable for a wide range of applications in the power-management space. It is a DC-DC buck regulator (step-down DC-DC converter) which operates in a voltage-effective PWM mode and integrates all the essential features needed to build cost-effective and space-saving point-of-load (POL) efficient power solutions.

This integrated regulator features up to 95% efficiency over a wide input voltage range, low environmental noise, low switching current and output voltage noise, an adjustable soft-start, an adjustable loop compensation, an enable pin enable and a power-good indicator. Further more, it can handle a minimum input voltage as low as 0.8V, providing significant savings in overall system cost.

Working Principle

TPS62353YZGT operates in a voltage-effective PWM mode, which ensures high efficiency over a wide input voltage range. It consists of an internal high-side NMOS (N-channel metal-oxide semiconductor) transistor and a low-side PMOS (P-channel metal-oxide semiconductor) transistor, which forms a voltage divider.

The output voltage ramps up by activating the high-side NMOS and the PMOS, and the current will flow from the LOW- side PMOS through the load and into the HIGH-side NMOS. The voltage drop between the high-side NMOS and the low-side PMOS will depend on the output voltage.

To keep an output voltage, the high-side NMOS and the PMOS must be switched on and off rapidly, which will maintain the output voltage across the load. The on and off cycle of the high-side NMOS and the low-side PMOS is precisely controlled by internally generated PWM signals.

The on/off duration of the high-side NMOS and the PMOS controls the output current and voltage. When the high-side NMOS is on longer than the PMOS, the output voltage will increase.

Conversely, when the PMOS is on longer than the high-side NMOS, the output voltage will decrease. This is done by comparing the output voltage with an internal reference voltage.

This method ensures that the output voltage is maintained at the price point regardless of input voltage and load changes. Other features such as soft-start, adjustable compensation and power-good indicator are available.
